Kalman Juvelier
Austrian-born Yiddish theatre actor, manager, and recording artist
Kalman Juvelier was a prominent figure in the Yiddish theatre scene, born in Austria and later immigrating to the United States in 1900. He established himself as a talented actor, manager, and recording artist, making significant contributions to the industry. Juvelier's career spanned both Europe and the US, with a notable presence in New York's Yiddish theatre community. He collaborated with renowned performers, including Boris Thomashefsky, David Kessler, Bertha Kalich, and Jacob P. Adler, solidifying his position as a key player in the field.
As a versatile artist, Juvelier also made a name for himself as a Broder singer and tenor. Between 1905 and 1918, he recorded approximately 90 discs in the Yiddish language, primarily featuring Yiddish theatre music. These recordings were released on major labels in the New York area, further cementing his legacy. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Juvelier held leadership roles, serving as director of the Hebrew Actor's Union and the Jewish Theatrical Alliance.
