Vladimir Tismăneanu

Romanian-American academic (born 1951)

Vladimir Tismăneanu is a Romanian-American academic born in 1951, with a specialization in history and a focus on political systems and comparative politics. He is a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has held various leadership positions, including director of the university's Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies. Tismăneanu's expertise has been showcased through his work as chairman of the editorial committee and editor of the East European Politics and Societies academic review from 1998 to 2008.

As a prominent scholar, Tismăneanu has contributed to numerous periodicals, including Studia Politica, Journal of Democracy, and Revista 22, among others. He has also collaborated with international radio stations such as Radio Free Europe and Deutsche Welle, and has authored programs for the Romanian Television Company. In addition to his academic work, Tismăneanu has held positions in think tanks and research institutions, including serving as Academic Council Chairman of the Institute for People's Studies and President of the Scientific Council of the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes in Romania from 2010 to 2012.
