Theodor Reik

Austrian-American psychoanalyst (1888–1969)

Theodor Reik was a prominent Austrian-American psychoanalyst, born in 1888. He undertook his psychoanalytic training in Vienna, Austria, under the guidance of Sigmund Freud, as one of his earliest students. This foundational education played a significant role in shaping Reik's understanding and approach to psychoanalysis. His work was deeply influenced by the principles and theories developed by Freud, which he would later apply and expand upon in his own practice.

Reik's career extended across continents, and he became a key figure in introducing and developing psychoanalytic practices in the United States. Notably, he was a pioneer of lay analysis, a concept that allowed individuals without medical backgrounds to train and practice as psychoanalysts. Through his work, Reik contributed significantly to the field of psychology, particularly in the realm of psychoanalysis. He passed away in 1969, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated psychoanalyst who helped shape the field in the United States.
